I think I do like the Corolla hatchback XSE...

Small, looks good, hummm slightly more power than previous, nice interior, cool colors, three pedals... What’s not to like? Well, some stuff, I guess.

Things I don’t like: less cargo capacity than an iM, and much less than an old Vibe or Matrix. Heavily sloped glass makes it look like it has the cargo utility of a Scion tC liftback, rather than a hatchback:

Kinja'd!!!

But that wouldn’t necessarily be a deterrent for me, given my current situation:

I suppose you’d choose this of say a GTI because of price and reliability? In a perfect world, I’d take the GTI though... But, I think I would definitely prefer the Corolla over the Civic Sport hatchback.

Alrighty, back to looking up old Coronas for me.

(Spoiler: the guy ultimately says in the video that, no, this is not a hot hatch).

I actually quite like it as well, but there is something about the Hyundai Elantra GT hatch that I would take instead...the styling on the Corolla is nice IMO, but I think the Elantra looks nicer in my eyes because....I don’t know, it seems less overdone somehow? Don’t get my wrong, I do like the Corolla’s styling a lot, but it just seems like they tried a TAD too hard (you example of overly sloping glass taking up cargo space, for example). The Elantra GT hatch isn’t a hot hatch either (other than the N which we don’t get here, sadly...)

Still can’t fit a full-size fridge like my old C900. Pass

I think I like this design. It’s like a combination of fucked up 2010s over-styling but with a level of restraint and polish from an earlier era. Like it’s overdone in a clean way.

Almost like it’s good!

Or just buy the Civic Hatch Sport instead of the this and the GTI. More hp/tq and aftermarket already has it well above Si hp/tq. Plus the MPG is crazy good, 40 highway and have heard 44 is easy to hit. Maybe down on looks but clearly a the better hatch since the focus is dead

If there’s one thing I know about the aftermarket it’s that they’ll ignore a civic si

My point is more towards hatchbacks as there is no Si hatch. If there was I would say go all in as they are almost pushing 300 with the Si due to the larger turbos.

Wait for dealers to try to get rid of any remaining iM stock.

Perfect little fun-ish sporty-ish runabout when optioned with the stick.

I understand picking this over a Golf because of potential reliability problems of the VW, so you accept the worse driving characteristics and whatnot of the Toyota. However, in the free world you’ve got alternatives like the Hyundai i30 N, Peugeot 308 GTI, Renault Megane RS, Ford Focus ST and more. This Toyota makes no sense there, it’s just not competitive at all. You buy these as low risk commuter appliances, which doesn’t really make sense in the hot hatch market niche.

Saab C(lassic) 900. Somewhere around here I have a pic of it transporting a fridge in the hatch. If it weren’t for the handles we could have gotten it in all the way

IIRC there is a manual one. However, this is America, and it will likely be nigh impossible to buy one. Plus, compared to modern DCTs and (ug) CVTs, the fuel economy gains from a manual are negligible, and in many cases, nonexistant.

Yeah, I actually really like this one. If I were about three years older and could rationalize buying a new car, I would be shopping for one. Damn you, grad school...
